An Impressionist Monet Exhibit

Monet is an extensible database kernel under development
since 1993 at CWI. It is amongst the first full-fledged
implementations designed from the premisses that
main-memory considerations should drive the architecture.
That is, all but the largest databases are memory resident.

In this talk I will give a short overview of its architecture
and impact of the major design decisions. In particular,
I will report on results obtained for PC-based implementations,
which show that overall database performance has not been
improved over the last decade. The major bottleneck encountered
is that under traditional algorithms the CPUS stall on memory
access most of the time.

The Monet database kernel has been shown to able to exploit
all the resources, which lead to an overall system performance
several order of magnitude better than commercial available
solutions.

More information on the system can be found in http://www.cwi.nl/~monet,
VLDB'99 and VLDB Journal October 1999.
